This office is for the working mentors, to discuss day to day runnings of Chards mentorship program and sit and relax Very Happy

Since the head mentor gets an office in council, with this at least everyone else has a place to hang out, hopefully its used and does not get too dusty

Ok gang. I suppose I'll jump in and start the ball rolling here.

Ero has sent out letters to all the recent arrivals since the 13th, and she will be watching for new births and posting info here for the rest of us.

I consulted the town hall and pulled a list of all the current residents with 0 RP.
List is below.

It's a lot longer than I expected. Ero and I are thinking that many of these, since they aren't new, are simply lazy or lost. Perhaps we ought to reach out to some of them. Maybe they can be inticed to become active and Chard will gain a citizen.

We need to coordinate our efforts to avoid duplication if we agree on this. Also need to mark off those who ero has already lettered, since she gets her info from a different source.

If Ero and the others think it is worthwhile, I will take 123go8 all the way through the letter D

someone else can pick up from the letter E.

Thoughts anyone? Mr Mayor sir?

This is the letter that is being mailed to the new arrivals.

Welcome to Renaissance Kingdoms and the Town of Chard!
I am Erowyn, Chief Mentor for our fine town. Allow me to offer some basic info and tips to help you get started and avoid some common pitfalls.

Renaissance Kingdoms is a really fun game which can be played without taking more than 10 min of your time each day. You choose how much you want to be involved in it.

You will want to explore the town a bit; but don’t do anything rash yet, like buying anything from the market, or begging at the church. Your primary focus right now should be advancing to level 1. [I’ll tell you more about that in a moment.]

You should visit the Town Hall and read the Mayor’s message, and the Church to read Father Teagan’s message. If you won’t be able to get online for a couple of days, you can go into “retreat” at the church, which “pauses” your character in the game; but don’t click this unless you mean it, because once you do you won’t be able to work that day!

Be sure to visit the Tavern! The tavern is a chatroom, where you will no doubt meet other townsfolk, and is an important part of the game. Chardians are a friendly and helpful sort who will happily answer questions and offer advice, or buy you an ale. It will also improve your mood after a hard day at the mines!

You should also visit the RK forums [be sure to register using your in-game name!]
http://forum.renaissancekingdoms.com/viewforum.php?f=69
Go to “Sommerset Inn>Chard Hall” There you will find lots of helpful info for new arrivals, and learn a bit about your fellow citizens also.

You MUST eat every day to stay healthy. Eat one bread, or two corn, whichever is cheaper. Do NOT buy or eat anything other than bread or corn for now. Certain foods provide stat increases, but they will be of no use to you until you reach level 1, and you need to save your money.

You can eat by:
1. Ordering the “Chardian Rye” from the menu in the Greenbush tavern
2. Buying bread from the Market [Town>Market>player sells] then eating it by going My home>my inventory>bread> “use.” You should already have 2 bread in your inventory.
*Do NOT use the “Order a meal from the town hall” link as it has a bug in it, and nobody likes bugs in their bread.

Now, about reaching level 1:
You will need to obtain 5 reputation points (RP) and save up 90 pounds.

You must obtain 3 RP from “trust” granted by fellow players and 2 more by “working for the church.” Each player is allowed to give out 2 trust points a week. You can ask for trust from people in the tavern, exchange trust with other new players, or ask for trust in the “ALMS/trust St. Cross” thread in the forums.

Earning money:
You will need to find a job each and every day.
1. You can work at the church, which gains you a RP, but only pays 5P.
2. You can sometimes get a job with the town militia at the town hall.
3. You can sometimes find work by applying for a job [town hall>job announcements] if there is one requiring no skills.
4. The best place for a beginner to work is in the mines; it pays over 16P. Go to Duchy>Work> and work in the stone or iron mine. The county pays you half the money the next day, and the balance on the following Sunday. You can also enter the miner’s lottery [http://forum.renaissancekingdoms.com/viewtopic.php?t=33683] for a chance to win up to 20P.

In a week or two, you should have all you need to “level up.” To do this, go to Duchy>Castle>Meet the Count First Secretary. He will take your payment, and grant you citizenship and a field. Don’t choose to be a “vagrant” because you won’t get a field if you do. You can always sell your filed on the land market for 400-500 Pounds if you decide not to farm. Check with some other players or the Mayor if you need help choosing what crop or livestock to raise.

These are just some very basic tips, and I am sure you will have many more questions along the way. Your fellow Chardians are always willing to help. Ask someone in a tavern, or the forums, or feel free to use the “Mail” link in the game to contact me or another town mentor. [Erowyn, Sela, Crepitus, Brighda, Atri or Barerose] Interested in a buddy to help you out? Contact us because there are many citizens ready to help make your life in Chard as rewarding as possible.

Welcome to Chard! Enjoy the game!

Sincerely,
Erowyn

PS: You can help RK grow and prosper by using the links on the main page to “vote” for Renaissance Kingdoms.

Well it looks this idea may be a dry hole. Ive been through the A's and so far they all mostly all dead.

One poor girl was completely bald, no wonder she killed herself.

I found 2 on retreat and sent letters just incase they return, Ive edited the original list with the updates.

Not sure if this is going to be worth the effort after all.
Do dead people stay n the town rolls indefinately?

yours,

My understanding is that the admins purge them eventually. I think they purged a lot prior to the influx of new people this last month. Unfortunately 2 promising younglings that I gave trust to just about 2 weeks ago are dead. Katriana and Elkebrer.

Sounds like a good idea. If you find any that were born before the 13th, they might have fallen through the cracks. Even if they recieved an earlier letter, it couldn't hurt to hit em again, lol.

Any idea how many new players Chard gets in an average week? I have an idea I'd like to float, but want some idea of how many we're talking about before I bring it up.

It depends, probably on average not too many, but now and then the admins come through and clear out all the dead players, then we have a major influx of new people, no idea when those come those, also with all the new towns we probably will get less until the towns in england all average out a bit

PostSubject: Re: Mentor Office   Wed Jun 20, 2007 10:05 am

Ero shared some feedback from Rebo on our new welcome letter. He brings up some good points:

Quote :
This looks good. It is much shorter than the last one, which is probably a good thing. But since it is shorter, there is less info- the info for level 1 players seems to have been cut. Again, I think this is a good thing since most of the mails will be going out to new players.

But there is one thing missing that I think is very important: a rundown of some of the basic laws. Speculation, manipulation and slavery (even if they are not hiring workers yet) are easy to explain and important to know. And this will make the police's job easier.

I pondered some on this and have a couple of possibilites to toss out.

Option 1: Rewrite the current letter to address these issues.
advantages:
- one fell swoop, no additonal mailings
- simplifies keeping track of who has been sent what
disadvantages:
-May seem less "welcoming"
- longer, more complicated, risk of info overload

Option B [hehe]: Send a second letter out to new level ones
advantages:
- target info for specific audience
- provide a "follow up" contact to the player
Disadvantages:
- may be hard to track
- some Level 0's might get into trouble before getting this info

Ero, does the mentor menu show you who has just leveled up also? Or just the new arrivals? If not, then I have another idea.
Not everyone will reach level one at the same pace, and most will have 5RP long before they save up 90P. So going by dates alone isn't really practical. BUT, we could keep an eye on the town roster and see who has 6RP. Chances are that a person with 6RP has just leveled up [or worked in the church an extra day, I suppose].

If it didn't overwhelm us with work, we could send out a letter congratulating them on reachcing level one and offering further tips. The info Rebo mentioned is more likely to benefit a new lev 1 than a 0. A 0 can only get into so much trouble, right? lol.

There are no doubt other options the rest of you have, and I am by no means that fond of either of mine. Option 3, i suppose is to leave it just as it is. My concern is that we might be trying to make these letters take the place of the how-to guides. A player has to do some of his own leg work. I dont mind helping them find the loo, but I'm not gonna wipe it for them when theyre done.

At any rate, here is a mock up rough draft of a follow up letter that might work for Option 2 . [Most of it came from Poli's lev 1 letter] Please cut this up and re-write it or twindle with it all you want. Its just a rough draft.

PROPOSED LETTER FOR ALL PLAYERS REACHING 6RP:

Congratulations on reaching Level 1!
You are now a full citizen of Chard, and we are proud to have you.

By now, you have probably found your way around to the various places and institutions in town. Now, as you begin your new and prosperous future, let me offer some tips that may help you along the way.

I hope you have taken time to browse the forums, especially the helpful guides in the library. [link]

Now that you are level 1, you can hire workers, raise crops or livestock, travel, and vote in our elections.

Hiring workers:
You can work your own fields, of course, but there are advantages to hiring out the work. You earn 1 Rep Point for each person you employ, and many fields will produce higher yields if they are worked by players with higher stats. This frees you to take a job with someone else, or work elsewhere.
Access your field by going My Home>your home. And clicking on the picture of your field. You can hire from the menu there. Be sure to set your wage at 15 Pounds or more! [See “Laws,” below]

Woodchopping:
A good alternative to earn a decent income once you acquire enough stats( intelligence and strength). Be careful in the forest, once you click on a tree, you WILL cut wood that day whether you intended to or not. Please check the Mayor's message or the forums for details.

Travel:
The roads of Sommerset are usually pretty safe, but occasionally there are bandits that may rob or kill you. Talk with someone with some experience before you venture out of town.

Laws:
The Duchy of Somerset, to which Chard belongs, has one of the most elaborate [but also strict] set of laws in England. You can read the Law by going to Duchy>>Castle>>Laws and Decrees. Some things that might not seem illegal could actually be a crime here.

Here are a couple of the most commonly misunderstood laws.

Slavery:
The minimum wage for all of Sommerset, including Chard, is 15 Pounds. Do NOT post any job offers for less than 15P! The game defaults to 12, so it easy to make a mistake. If you do, go My Home>My Job Offers> cancel. If it’s too late and you’ve already hired someone at 12, mail the Chief of Police [Barerose] at once, and he will tell you how to resolve the issue.

Speculation:
Buying up goods from the market and re-selling them at a higher price in the same town is illegal. NEVER do this! Selling to other towns is more complicated, and you should consult our Town Merchant [Rebo] for some tips on becoming a merchant before setting out to peddle wares in other places.

If you have any questions contact the Mayor, the town Priest, or a mentor, and they will tell you who to ask about specific legal questions.

Politcs:
Elections in Somerset are sometimes quite lively. As a citizen, you can vote for the leadership of both your town and the Duchy. Again, you may want to talk with other players for some insight on how the process works, and some of the pitfalls to avoid. The taverns are a great place to do this.

For a mayoral election, you vote from the town hall. For a Duchy election, go to Duchy>>Castle>>Election of the Council and check the various lists running in the upcoming election.

The SAS.
Many people from Chard have joined the official army of Somerset (Somerset Armed Services). A good way to have fun, build stats, and help defend your Duchy. You can join the SAS here:
http://somerset.quickbb.net/Enter-Hall-c7/SAS-recruitement-office-f34.htm

Want to contribute to Chard’s community? Chard has many programs that involve wheat growers, millers, bakers, butchers and others which benefit its citizens. Contact the Mayor [Mikeblack] for more info if you’re interested.

Reaching Level 2:
To reach the next level you will need 35 RP, and 20 in all Stat categories [STR, INT, CHR] and save up 500 Pounds.

Again, welcome to Chard, and feel free to mail any of the Mentor team if you need help.

And, if you haven’t done so, please drop by the taverns and chat with us sometime!

Sincerely,
Your fellow Chardian,______

I personally think option 3 would be best. We don't want to overwhelm them with too much info in one letter. Wink *giggles at Atri's comment about the loo*
Option 2 also sounds interesting, although it might be a little tricky to do. What do you think mentors? I'd like to know your opinion.

And Atri, my list only shows the names of everyone in Chard and their "birth date". (Thanks again for your help)

I agree that we do no want to overwhelm them, we also do not want to as Atri says take the place of the many how tos. Therefor my opinion is send them a short letter reminding them that w are mentors and available to answer questions and then add something like [Be aware like a real life community RK, Somerset county and Chard have laws that if broken can have serious consequences, like the laws on minimum wage and slavery. You can read the law by going to Duchy and then to Law Courts. If you are confused contact me or another mentor.]
